The basics

What is a payment gateway in Thailand?

A payment gateway accepts a customer's payment at checkout, authorises it, and settles the money to your account. Boldrails provides that service for businesses selling into Thailand.

Thailand inverts the method order most Western checkouts assume. QR and bank rails carry the domestic online volume. PromptPay, the national real-time rail, and Thai QR Payment, the QR standard that runs on it, come first. Mobile banking and internet banking come next. Credit card and debit card acceptance still matters for international buyers, but cards are a secondary rail here, and they are the most expensive one to accept.

That order has a direct cost consequence, which we set out below. It also changes what your gateway has to support. A payment gateway built only for card acquiring will serve a Thai checkout badly, whatever its brand recognition elsewhere.

Which payment methods do Thai customers use?

Thai buyers reach for methods in a specific order, and it is not the order a Western checkout defaults to. Here is what an online payment gateway in Thailand needs to carry, ranked by the volume each rail moves.

  1. PromptPay and Thai QR Payment

The national QR and account-to-account rail. The Bank of Thailand supervises it as regulated payment infrastructure. It is also the cheapest method to accept.

  2. Mobile banking and internet banking

Direct bank debits through the major Thai bank apps, including K PLUS, SCB Easy, Krungthai NEXT, Bualuang and KMA Krungsri.

  3. TrueMoney Wallet

The dominant Thai e-wallet. Every Thai gateway we reviewed supports it.

  4. Credit card and debit card

Visa, Mastercard, JCB, UnionPay and American Express, for international buyers and higher-value baskets.

  5. Inbound tourist wallets

Alipay, WeChat Pay and Rabbit LINE Pay capture visitor spend, which matters for travel, hospitality and retail.

  6. Bank transfer and over-the-counter payment

Still used for larger baskets and for buyers without a card.

A Thailand checkout offering cards alone will underconvert. The QR and bank rails are where Thai buyers already are, so a gateway that treats them as an afterthought costs you sales. Thailand payment methods also split cleanly by cost, which is the next section.

Developers integrating one rail at a time should start with our dedicated PromptPay and TrueMoney references.

What it costs

How much does a payment gateway cost in Thailand?

Thai published rates run from about 1% to 5.5%, and the method decides the number. Every figure below is a rate the provider publishes itself, collected from the providers' own rate cards and from the most-cited Thai gateway comparison, extracted 1 August 2026. Where a provider quote-gates its pricing, the row says so instead of guessing.

MethodPublished Thai ratesProviders that publishVAT treatment
PromptPay QR1% to 1.65%Pay Solutions 1%, Opn Payments 1.65%Quoted before 7% VAT

Two things follow, and neither is stated by the comparisons currently ranking for this term.

First, method mix moves your effective cost more than provider choice does. PromptPay QR costs 1% to 1.65% to accept. Cards cost 3% to 3.65% at the same providers. Shifting basket share from cards to QR cuts your blended merchant discount rate further than switching gateway ever will.

Second, every published Thai rate is quoted before 7% VAT. A 3.65% card transaction fee is 3.91% once VAT lands. Competitors bury that in a footnote.

We quote our own rate per account at onboarding, against your method mix, volume and business profile, rather than publish a headline number that would not survive contact with your basket.

Eligibility

Can a foreign company get a payment gateway in Thailand?

This is the question the Thai market answers worst.

The Thai providers we reviewed expect a Thai Limited Company or Limited Partnership, plus a Thai bank account in the company's name, before they will onboard you. Bank-owned gateways add their own bars on top. One accepts merchants only if they already bank with that bank. This is market practice at those providers, reported on their own pages, not a statement of Thai law.

The result is a wall. A business with real Thai demand and no Thai entity gets told to incorporate first, and nobody tells it what to do instead.

  • We onboard businesses that do not hold a Thai entity
  • Thailand routes are available on request, confirmed per account
  • Settlement can land in Thai baht or in another currency
  • We scope your PCI DSS obligations for card data during setup
  • We underwrite high-risk and high-volume merchants that the incumbents decline, assessed on your business rather than your category

Onboarding takes 3 to 14 days, depending on your case.

Declined by a Thai gateway because you have no Thai company? That is the case we onboard. Tell us your rails and volume and we confirm the route.

Regulation

Who regulates payments in Thailand?

The Bank of Thailand supervises payment systems and payment services. The governing framework is the Payment Systems Act B.E. 2560 (2017), in force since 16 April 2018, per the Bank of Thailand's own oversight guidance.

The Act sorts payments into three categories: highly important payment systems, designated payment systems, and designated payment services. Designated payment services are the licensed ones a merchant deals with in practice: card services, electronic money, accepting electronic payment on behalf of sellers, and electronic money transfer. The Minister of Finance issues those licences, on the Bank of Thailand's recommendation, and the Bank of Thailand supervises the licence holders.

PromptPay is operated by National ITMX, and final interbank settlement runs through BAHTNET, the Bank of Thailand's large-value transfer system. Thai QR Payment is the national QR standard that runs on the PromptPay system.

Two obligations sit with you as the merchant. Card data handling is subject to PCI DSS. Personal data is subject to Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), fully effective since 1 June 2022.

Boldrails is a licensed principal provider. We hold the necessary licences required in the markets we serve. Nothing in this section describes a Boldrails licence position in Thailand.

The matrix fills three columns that the Thai market leaves empty. "Not published" means the provider publishes nothing on that point. No cell is inferred or estimated.

These providers beat us on real points, and pretending otherwise would waste your time. 2C2P carries more than 250 payment methods, 45 currencies and over 400,000 over-the-counter locations, per its own published figures. Opn Payments publishes a full rate card, which most of this market will not do. Pay Solutions prices PromptPay QR at 1%, the lowest published rate in Thailand.

Where a third-party roundup claimed a figure that the provider's own site did not confirm, we left the cell empty rather than repeat it. Several widely cited Thailand comparisons still list providers that no longer trade under those names.
